A young trainee chef at a remote luxury lodge suffered burns across more than 60% of her body when a flare-up caught her while lighting warming dishes. With the rainy season making the only road out impassable, an air ambulance was mobilised from Arusha, landing on a 900-metre grass airstrip. Our team stabilised her on-site for over six hours before evacuation – first to Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, then home to Switzerland for specialist burns care. Years later, she sent photos of her full recovery.
Eastern Cape, South Africa
A Charging Elephant. A Four-Hour Window.
A young, inexperienced ranger was caught between a protective elephant matriarch and her calf near a waterhole. He slipped, and in her panic, she trampled him – fracturing his ribs, sternum, pelvis, and femur, with a collapsed lung and a brain bleed. It took 40 minutes just to reach him. Our team decompressed his chest, splinted his fractures, and stabilised him on the ground for nearly four hours, guided by a doctor on the satellite phone, until an air ambulance could land and complete the evacuation. Against the odds, he survived.

Five Sick. One Cause No One Suspected.
A seismic survey crew in a remote part of the DRC began falling ill one by one – vomiting, fever, uncontrollable symptoms. What looked like an outbreak turned out to be contaminated water: a mosquito-control chemical had been mixed too close to the camp’s water supply. Five people required medical evacuation to the nearest facility, then onward by air ambulance. Despite rapid response, one life was lost – a reminder of how fast an unseen risk can turn into a mass-casualty event in a remote location,
